Power flows to all four wheels via the 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with Adaptive Transmission Control. Efficiency is enhanced by Driving Dynamics Control with ECO PRO mode, electronic throttle control and automatic start-stop function. Hill Descent Control, electric power steering with servotronic assist, a double wishbone front suspension and a lightweight multi-link integral rear suspension provide optimal handling and ride. The front seats feature 3-stage heating and 14-way power adjustments including 4-way lumbar support. The memory system remembers settings for the driver's seat, outside mirrors and steering wheel, which is a 3-spoke leather-wrapped power tilt/telescopic sport steering wheel with controls for cruise control, audio system and Bluetooth® wireless communication.

The X5 xDrive 40e is a plug-in hybrid featuring a 2.0L twin-turbo 4-cylinder gasoline engine making 242 horsepower, coupled to a 113-hp electric motor. A paddle-shiftable 8-speed Steptronic automatic sends power to all four wheels. The new 40e should be able to achieve 85.6 combined miles per gallon, 0 to 62 mpg acceleration in the 6.8-second range, and a top speed of 130 mph before the limiter kicks in. The battery pack is a 9.0kWh lithium-ion configuration positioned beneath the aft cargo floor. You can travel up to 19 miles in pure EV mode at up to 75 mph before engaging the engine, with mileage aided by Brake Energy Regeneration.

The battery can be charged as quickly as 2 hours 45 minutes. You can choose among three intelligent energy optimization settings. The Auto eDrive setting launches the X5 in electric mode and starts the engine after achieving 44 mph. You can also dial up Save Battery mode or Max eDrive for pure EV power. Of course, when in electric-only mode, the X5 produce zero emissions. Dynamic Damper Control oversees rear leveling, and Driving Experience Control sets transmission, throttle and steering mappings to Comfort/EcoPro/Sports settings. EcoPro mode turns off the engine while coasting or idling. There are few exterior clues to the EV nature of the 40e, except for badging, a charging port and special exhaust tips. The leather-appointed interior is especially luxurious.
